The owners of this traditional home outside of Redmond came to Ascent Architecture & Interiors requesting concepts to add a mother-in-law unit to their existing home. Sara worked in her capacity as design professional to develop a concept that provided the additional living space needed without appearing tacked on.

The final concept involved adding a sitting room, bedroom, master bath, and walk-in-closet in an L-shape around the existing garage. The addition was thoughtfully designed to appear as if it was a part of the original structure. Exterior materials - board & batt siding and asphalt shingle roofing - were carried over from the existing structure, and windows were sized and selected to match the feel of the existing windows while maximizing views of the pond and pastures at the rear of the home.

As an addition to an existing residence, this project provided some specific challenges to be overcome. Since the addition wraps around the garage, an entryway had to be incorporated to maintain the owners’ access from the garage to the yard, and the roof had to be cut back around a window to an above-the-garage rec room to maintain the light provided. Ultimately, these changes combined to make a stronger overall design and led to a constructed addition that is essentially indecipherable from the existing home.
